There is just something about secret passageways that never gets old. We are pretty sure secret passageways date all the way back to the time of the pyramids. For some reason people love the mystery that comes with hidden door bookshelves, or hidden passageways. The following are a few famous houses that have cool hidden passageways.
The Wolf’s Lair
The Wolf’s lair castle in Hollywood, now owned by Moby, was once home to L. Milton Wolf, one of the early developers of Hollywoodland. Wolf was known for his eccentric taste, including a fond liking of secret passageways. These passageways lead to a secret tiki bar in the home. It was once said that Moby planned to convert the tiki bar into an invitation-only magic theater.
House of Seven Gables
The novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne was inspired by this home. The setting of his book was inspired by the house that his cousin grew up in. Hawthorne’s cousin’s home was later purchased and turned into a museum. The new owner added a couple of elements from Hawthorne’s book including a secret staircase in a closet and a candy shop.
The Darwin House
In 2007, John Darwin walked into an England police station claiming to be suffering from amnesia. His wife had reported him missing almost five years earlier, he was eventually declared dead. Darwin’s wife later claimed insurance pensions totaling more than $250,000. Later the couple was busted for insurance fraud. The interesting part is where Darwin was actually staying. The couple owned the property next door to their home and Darwin built a tunnel from the wife’s bedroom to one of the rooms in the home next door. This way he could hide when needed and still spend time with his wife.
